Richard Afable, MD, MPH, is president and chief executive officer of St.
Joseph Hoag Health, a Southern California integrated delivery system created
by the affiliation of St. Joseph Health and Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian.
St. Joseph Hoag Health is comprised of seven hospitals, an expansive physician
network, and numerous ambulatory sites throughout Orange County, California,
and the High Desert. Dr. Afable is also executive vice president and regional
senior executive for St. Joseph Health in Southern California and interim
chief executive officer for Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. Prior to
the creation of St. Joseph Hoag Health, Dr. Afable was the president and
CEO of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian.
Dr. Afable is one of Becker’s Hospital Review’s list of Health
System Leaders to Know. He is also on Becker’s Hospital Review’s
2012 list of 100 Leaders of Great Hospitals and the 2012 lists of 100
Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems.
Formerly, he was executive vice president and chief medical officer at
Catholic Health East, an East Coast health system comprised of 31 acute-care
hospitals and 47 long-term care facilities. Before joining Catholic Health
East, Dr. Afable was the founder and president/CEO of Preferred Physician
Partners, an Ohio-based physician practice management company.
A board-certified internist and geriatrician, Dr. Afable practiced clinical
medicine for more than 15 years, in private practice and as clinical assistant
professor of medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, and as an
associate professor of medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem,
