Employment FAQs

Common Employment Questions

As a health care professional, my patient comes first. Can you describe how you create an environment that ensures employees have the necessary resources to provide outstanding patient care?

St. Joseph Health has a tradition of values-based care and a mission to provide the best quality patient care to those in the communities we serve. With that as a foundation, we rely on open communication and collaboration on the part of all employees to personally take accountability to translate that tradition into the highest quality patient and customer care. Some of the available avenues for these activities are process improvement teams, financial reporting, department meetings that foster maximum involvement, and strategic planning that takes into account relationships, process and results.

Describe how the new hire orientation program works. Can it be customized to my particular needs and schedule?

Every new employee participates in a comprehensive orientation to ensure familiarity to the hospital culture, programs and policies. This enables full engagement of our new team members and facilitates a higher level of understanding with the campus and the SJH organization. Our goal is to work with new hires individually to structure an orientation program that best fits with particular circumstance and needs.

What are the various ways the hospital ensures employee communication?

We are proud to say that we have multiple avenues for two-way communication at each of our facilities. Among them are: intranet access, daily newsletters, employee forums, committee involvement, annual employee opinion survey and follow-up, and ongoing collaborative conversations among and with staff and management. Our value of dignity calls for open communication and timely feedback and these mechanisms help facilitate that commitment.

How do I receive regular feedback regarding my progress and performance?

The SJH value of Excellence is defined as fostering accountability and commitment to quality. To that goal, employees participate in collaborative formal and informal conversations about performance in order to celebrate contribution and coach for enhanced levels of performance. This culminates in an annual formal assessment of performance that focuses equally on "what" you do and "how" you do it -- the values-based behaviors demonstrated on the job.

If I work for one St. Joseph Health location (ministry), do I have the ability to transfer to other locations in the future?

Yes, you do. We have a proud history of providing continued opportunities for staff at our other locations throughout California and in West Texas. You are encouraged to pursue these career options as they may come available.

Can you describe some of the ways employees can become involved in community activities?

All of our facilities are committed to reaching out into the community to make a difference every day. Some examples of this involvement are formal fund-raising programs, volunteer sharing opportunities, Adopt-A-Family programs, etc.

Please see our Community Benefit section for more information about our community initiatives.
