Socially Responsible Investing is a process that incorporates an investor's social, ethical, moral and religious principles to help drive investment decision-making. St. Joseph Health System adopted such a policy in 1996. Components include:
-
Allocation of three percent of the St. Joseph Health System portfolio for the Community Investment Loan Fund;
-
Evaluation and participation in sponsoring change through the voting of proxies, sponsorship and co-sponsorship of shareholder resolutions in companies that have business policies or philosophies, products, or views that are contrary to the St. Joseph Health System mission or Catholic teachings;
-
Screening of portfolio investments, banks, and investment managers to verify that our investments reflect our values and support social responsibility.
The focus of our efforts is in the communities in which we have healthcare facilities, so we invest at least 50 percent of the fund in California, Texas and New Mexico. Qualified nonprofit organizations engaged in services that benefit the community may access the money. These services must be in accord with the ethical and religious directives of the Catholic Church.
