Keeping people – and communities – healthy means more than
treating illness and injury. It means partnering with people
before they get sick and making it easy and convenient for them to exercise,
get preventive care like vaccines and screenings and learn how to eat right.
But in today's fast-paced lifestyle, a lifestyle where we're eating
breakfast in the car and checking emails at night on our phones, our health
sometimes takes a back seat. What's the solution? Health and wellness
professionals need to meet people where they live and work.
St. Joseph Hoag Health, we understand being a true health partner means being present in the
everyday patterns of people's lives. Working closely with the
Irvine Company, a master planner and real estate company that shares our vision of healthier
communities, we've introduced Wellness Corners in neighborhood and
We know this works. Before we introduced this concept into the community,
we launched our own onsite Wellness Corner for St. Joseph Health employees.
Even though they work for a health care organization, St. Joseph Health
employees put off preventive screenings such as flu shots because they
didn't have time to go to their doctor's office. Today, our employees
are getting those screenings and are healthier than ever because health
care services are available within steps of their offices and desks.
Wellness Corner opened, St. Joseph Health employees have reported a 29 percent decrease
in inactivity, a 4 percent decrease in obesity and an 18.5 percent decrease
in stress. Many of those visiting the center said they most likely would
have avoided preventive and basic care had they not had the services immediately
available to them.
Our first community Wellness Corner is located within the Park Place business
community, one of Irvine's busiest office centers. Thousands of employees
have immediate access to health care, telehealth and fitness services
right outside their office doors. An employee can stop by to get a flu
shot, review his lab test results to ensure that his cholesterol levels
have gone down (due to a new healthy eating routine) and attend a seminar
about the benefits of mindful meditation.
Wellness Corner, located at Four Park Plaza at Jamboree Center, will service about 200
businesses as well as guests at Hotel Irvine. Offering basic medical care,
the Wellness Corner will also focus on services that help to improve the
health and wellness of today's working professional and prevent chronic
conditions through lifestyle management programs. Employees and hotel
guests can access services that will help improve the
mind (stress management, yoga, sleep improvement and meditation) and
plate (nutrition coaching, menu planning and personalized food plans).
These Wellness Corners are innovative solutions to health care challenges;
they give people the ability to control their health on their own time
through flexible walk-in medical services and a wide range of lifestyle
The St. Joseph Hoag Health Wellness Corner is more than a just a concept.
Our centers are emerging as successful clinics that empower people to
take control of their health to prevent illnesses and increase their well-being.
We are planning to open additional locations throughout Orange County
soon, each with the goal to make healthy living for our family, friends
and neighbors more convenient, flexible and accessible.
By making access to health care and wellness programs convenient, we can
help people manage their health and ward off illness. This is the health
care model of the present and of the future.
