St. Joseph Hospital Names New CEO

St. Joseph Hospital and St. Joseph Health today announced that Mr. Steve Moreau has been named St. Joseph Hospital’s new President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Mr. Moreau succeeds former CEO Larry Ainsworth, who retired June 30, 2010.

Steve Moreau

Over the past five years Mr. Moreau has served as President and CEO at San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland, California. During his time at San Antonio Community Hospital, Mr. Moreau has directed the financial turnaround of the hospital, engaged the Board and medical staff in developing robust strategic, operating, financial and capital plans. In addition, Mr. Moreau successfully reversed consecutive years of financial losses and achieved historic high margins for the hospital.

Prior to leading San Antonio Community Hospital, Mr. Moreau served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach for 14 years. During his time at Hoag Hospital, he was responsible for leading the development of their centers of excellence in cancer, heart and vascular, orthopedics, and women's services, as well as spearheading its clinical quality, safety, and patient satisfaction initiatives.

“Steve is an outstanding leader and hospital administrator, whose contagious passion for excellence has led to a remarkable list of achievements,” explains Sister Theresa LaMetterey, CSJ, chair of St. Joseph Hospital Board of Trustees. “We are truly blessed that Steve has chosen to join our hospital; his extensive experience and talents will ensure that St. Joseph Hospital will remain one of the top hospitals in the country, at the leading edge of healthcare and continue to meet the needs of local residents just as we have done since we first opened our hospital doors in 1929.”

Mr. Moreau received his undergraduate education at San Diego State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology. He also earned a Master of Science degree in medical technology from California State University – Dominguez Hills, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Redlands. He and his wife, Anne, have three adult children.

Joe Randolph, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of St. Joseph Health, the organization of which St. Joseph Hospital is a member, has been serving as interim-CEO of St. Joseph Hospital since July. Mr. Randolph noted that the CEO selection committee included representatives from the health system and hospital working together to conduct a thoughtful and thorough nationwide search for the candidate who would best serve St. Joseph Hospital, the community, and the values of the St. Joseph Health System.

“Steve brings 35 years of healthcare operations and planning experience and a commitment to the St. Joseph Health mission,” said Randolph. “His background in building effective management teams, working collaboratively with physicians, and helping clinicians and staff provide the highest quality of care to patients has prepared him to lead St. Joseph Hospital during unprecedented times and changes in the healthcare environment.”

Mr. Moreau, who formally begins his new role as CEO on December 1, 2010, says he eagerly looks forward to joining the St. Joseph Health family. “St. Joseph Hospital and the people of St. Joseph Health System have a shining reputation in Orange County,” says Mr. Moreau. “I feel honored and privileged to join this amazing team of healthcare professionals and to build on the nearly 100 year healthcare legacy of St. Joseph Health System and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange.”
