St. Joseph Hospital Physician Awarded Home Care Physician of the Year

Brian Boyd, M.D., medical director of the St. Joseph Health Hospital Palliative Care Team, was recently awarded the Home Care Physician of the Year Award by the California Association for Health Services at Home (CAHSAH). The award recognizes physicians who excel in providing and utilizing home care and optimize the role of home care within the health care system.

"Dr. Boyd was recognized for his significant involvement in a wide range of activities including palliative care councils, the Quarterly Council and the Ethics Committee," said President of CAHSAH Joe Hafkenschiel. "He was also recognized for his outstanding communication skills and his ability to engage the patient and their family."

As the medical director of the Palliative Care Team at St. Joseph Health – St. Joseph Hospital, Dr. Boyd assists patients and their families to discuss and clarify goals at the most crucial times in a person's life. He then works with a multidisciplinary team to support the patient choice and the best quality of life.

Liz Wessel, director of education and mission services for St. Joseph Health Home Health Network said that Dr. Boyd is an integral part of the palliative care program. "Dr. Boyd is an advocate for some of the most vulnerable home care patients in the community," she said, "his impact is far-reaching and expansive across care settings."

The Home Care Physician of the Year Award was presented at the CAHSAH 2012 Annual Conference and Home Care Expo by Nominating Committee Chair, Craig Falk with Craig Cares in Roseville.
