SJH has partnered with American Academy of Pediatrics to fight childhood obesity with the creation of the Healthy For Life (H4L) campaign, which focuses on getting kids and their families to develop healthy lifestyle choices by incorporating both physical activity and a responsible diet. Healthy For Life is a comprehensive social and healthcare outreach initiative. This campaign focuses on the following:

  • Addressing environment issues
    • Community
    • Schools
    • Grocery Stores
    • Home
  • Communicating with key audiences
    • Parents
    • Students
    • Teachers
    • School administrators

As part of Healthy For Life, 1,500 students in more than 47 Orange County schools participate in a free, curriculum-based physical education program that instills the importance of fitness and nutrition to obtain optimum and long-lasting healthy results. A physician and dietician from one of the SJH local hospitals go to each participating school to help educate the students.

In the upcoming 09-10 school year, H4L is expanding to Northern California (Napa).

For the nutritional component of Healthy For Life, SJH has partnered with celebrity Mexican food chefs Jaime Martín del Campo and Ramiro Arvizu, owners of the award-winning restaurant La Casita Mexicana, to developed the Healthy For Life Recipes, a series of recipes for children and their families that are easy, taste great and healthy.

Videos with the Chefs highlighting the health benefits of the Healthy For Life Recipes were produced and being used as educational materials on healthy eating.

SJH also has partnered with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for a back to school promotions that distributed 15,000 H4L backpacks at the August 29th home game. As part of the collaboration, SJHS also has a H4L commercial running at the home games on the stadium’s jumbo television screen.
