Health is a Moral Imperative The Orange County Register October 31, 2005 By Jack Glaser
The Register is correct that O.C. supervisor Lou Correa's proposal is not a good long-term, upstream solution to children's health care ["County can't solve health care problem," editorial Oct. 21]. But as a downstream rescue effort it responds to a moral imperative. It addresses an urgent need of children who are currently neglected by the public and private sector.
I would hope that the Register plays a constructive leadership role by distinguishing between urgent, immediate needs of children and long-term, systemic solutions. It is mistaken and callous to dismiss urgent rescue efforts for children because they fail to solve long-term problems. Urge the long-term efforts in a direction of your choice; but join, don't belittle, urgent efforts to meet children's needs.
