St. Joseph Health (SJH) is an integrated Catholic health care delivery
system sponsored by the
St. Joseph Health Ministry.
It is organized into three regions:
SJH provides a full range of care facilities including 16 acute care hospitals,
home health agencies, hospice care, outpatient services, skilled nursing
facilities, community clinics and physician groups. All of our hospital
and home health entities are accredited by the Joint Commission. In our
award-winning facilities, SJH maintains a “continuum of care,”
matched to the diverse needs of the urban centers, smaller cities and
rural communities who depend on us every day.
Established in 1982, the roots of our health care organization date back
more than 100 years to 1912 when a handful of Midwestern religious women,
who became the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, traveled across the country
to open a school and eventually a small hospital in the lumber town of
Eureka, California. Today, SJH continues its work in the tradition of
the Sisters through our acute care hospitals, home health care, rehabilitation
programs, primary care clinics and many community outreach and wellness
programs. In each community it touches, SJH reaches out to care for the
poor and vulnerable.
Based in Irvine, Calif., SJH serves 10 distinct communities within these
three general regions and strives to provide perfect care while building
the healthiest communities and ensuring every encounter is sacred. These
extraordinary efforts have been recognized locally and nationally, including
distinctions in US News & World Report and Magnet recognition.
What Drives Us
Our mission, vision and values work together to shape our decisions and
guide our actions. They form the heart of our health care ministry.
Our Mission is to extend the healing ministry of Jesus in the tradition of the Sisters
of St. Joseph of Orange by continually improving the health and quality
of life of people in the communities we serve.
Our Vision is to bring people together to provide compassionate care, promote health
improvement and create healthy communities.
transforming to embrace an illness and wellness model and realize a greater balance
between hospitals and community-based care. The intent is to become networks
of care, addressing the well and the sick.
The four core
Values of SJH serve as the guiding principles for all we do, shaping our interactions
with those whom we are privileged to serve.
DIGNITY – We respect each person as an inherently valuable member of the
human community and as a unique expression of life.
SERVICE – We bring people together who recognize that every interaction
is a unique opportunity to serve one another, the community, and society.
EXCELLENCE – We foster personal and professional development, accountability,
innovation, teamwork, and commitment to quality.
JUSTICE – We advocate for systems and structures that are attuned to the
needs of the vulnerable and disadvantaged and that promote a sense of
