Jim Watson, Esq.
Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel
Jim Watson, Esq. serves as Deputy General Counsel for Providence St. Joseph
Health (PSJH). Jim joined St. Joseph Health’s Office of General
Counsel in September 1996. Jim was promoted to Corporate Counsel in 1998
and was promoted to Deputy General Counsel in 2007. Following the combination
of St. Joseph Health and Providence St. Joseph Health, Jim has continued
in the Deputy General Counsel role for the combined ministry’s Department
of Legal Affairs. Additionally, Jim served as St. Joseph Health’s
Chief Ministry Integrity (Compliance) Officer between 2013 and 2017, and
provided leadership to the Ministry Integrity and Ministry Security departments.
Jim brings 20 years of Catholic health care experience to his role. Together
with PSJH’s highly-skilled team, Jim continues to transform the
Department of Legal Affairs’ role to that of a strategic business
partner and agent for organizational change valued for its ability to
directly enable PSJH goals and vision. Additionally, he oversees the work
performed by outside counsel for quality, efficiency and performance and
leads development of standards for providing legal services to improve
quality and reduce costs throughout PSJH.
Jim also advises PSJH, its ministries, governing bodies and executive management
on a broad range of matters, including operations, business formations,
strategic alliances, complex transactions, corporate governance, and state
and federal regulatory compliance. Jim has been consistently recognized
for his commitment to the mission, vision and values and his ability to
create and sustain positive working relationships, respond resourcefully
to demands and challenge and motivate others.
Jim graduated from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. He also holds a Bachelor
of Arts degree in Political Science from Hofstra University. Jim is a
member of the California State Bar, the American Health Lawyers Association,
the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys and the Association of
Corporate Counsel. Jim has proudly participated in several formation programs
sponsored by St. Joseph Health including Mission & Mentoring, Ministry
Leadership Center and the Public Juridic Personality collaborative program.
