Dr. Berta joined Queen of the Valley as the new Medical Director of Neurosurgery for the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in fall 2016. His expertise includes minimally invasive spine surgery and spine fusion alternatives. He is excited to champion Napa’s neuroscience program and brings years of clinical experience to the role.
Dr. Berta is also on UCSF’s faculty as the Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery. He completed his neurosurgery residency as well as a spine fellowship at Stanford University Hospital. He holds master’s degrees from two Ivy Leagues Universities, Princeton and University of Pennsylvania, in chemistry and biomedical engineering respectively. He has also served as a Lieutenant in the Unites States Naval Reserve.
Professor Berta is the recipient of multiple industry and patient awards and is widely published in the field of neurosurgery. Recently, he launched two internationally renowned textbooks in neurosurgery, where the cranial edition won the 2015 Prose Award for best medical publication.
Dr. Berta’s neurosurgical techniques including procedures on a famous jockey and former NFL player have been featured on television and news outlets across the country, such as CNN & USA Today.
