Dr. Harano, a founding member of Hoag Medical Group, remembers when Hoag
Hospital was “a small cottage hospital by the sea” where local
residents had to go to Los Angeles to see a specialist. Having practiced
in Newport Beach for 42 years, Dr. Harano has cared for many of his patients
for 30 to 40 years and has been instrumental in Hoag’s growth.
Dr. Harano is excited to be part of Hoag Medical Group because he feels
this is the future of health care, with consolidated resources to provide
better patient care with controlled medical costs. He notes, “Patients
are fortunate as Hoag has the best equipment along with top physicians.
Hoag Medical Group is taking an innovative approach to health care that
will better serve the community.”
Over the years, Dr. Harano has been Chief of Staff, served two terms on
the Board of Directors,
and volunteered on several committees, including playing a key role in
establishing full time emergent specialists in the Emergency Room and
requiring credentialed anesthesiologists
be on staff.
Dr. Harano claims he “fell” into medicine at the encouragement
of a college friend who convinced him to take the admission test and apply
to the University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Harano had been a chemistry
major and planned to pursue organic chemistry. After he finished medical
school he was drafted and served two years in the Air Force during the
Vietnam War. He was inspired by the Chief of Medicine at the University
of Minnesota to pursue Internal Medicine, and did his residency at UC
Irvine before relocating with his family to Newport Beach.
Once an avid skier, Dr. Harano now enjoys golf, fishing and hunting as
well as senior slow-pitch softball. He also devotes time to his wife and
family, including seven grandchildren.
