Dr. Jamal is a general gastroenterologist with additional training and
expertise in liver diseases (hepatology). With the assistance of a nurse
practitioner and dietician, Dr. Jamal leads the Liver Clinic which focuses
on patients with complicated liver diseases that require more intensive
management. This clinic has access to state of the art imaging, interventional
radiologists, oncologists, and Hepatobiliary surgeons in order to provide
truly comprehensive attention to our patients. A newly available technology
called the Fibroscan will enhance our accuracy for assessing damage to
the liver without having to do a liver biopsy.
Another passion of Dr. Jamal’s is the development of clinical research
trials. This will open up new opportunities for our patients with specific
GI diseases. Our most recent trials have been for the treatment of eosinophilic
esophagitis, constipation and patients with low platelets from cirrhosis
of the liver.
Dr. Jamal is also our center’s expert for the treatment of Barrett’s
Esophagus, a pre-cancerous condition which can lead to esophageal cancer.
He utilizes a technology called radiofrequency ablation and/or cryotherapy
in order to eliminate the Barrett’s esophagus all through noninvasive means.
Dr. Jamal has a passion for teaching students, nurses and physicians. He
is focused on providing compassionate care as part of a team of excellent
physicians which is what keeps him glued to the St. Jude Heritage family.
