You've signed up to bring snacks for your child's classroom Halloween
party. But with many school rules and dietary restrictions to take into
account--gluten free and peanut free, low in sugar and calories, to name
a few--bringing a healthy and yummy treat can be something of a trick.
Here are simple and creative ideas that will please any little ghouls
1. Roasted pumpkin seeds. What could be more seasonally appropriate than this snack? Roasting the
seeds in heart-healthy olive oil gives them a satisfying crunch, and you
can go savory (garlic powder, salt and pepper, for starters) or sweet

2. Apple muffins/cupcakes. Healthy recipes for these warmly spiced treats abound on the Internet,
with key ingredients such as whole-wheat flour (or a gluten-free type
such as oat flour), vegetable oil or Greek yogurt for moistness and pureed
and grated fruit for sweetness. If the kids can't resist cupcakes,
make some cream-cheese frosting to top them off. (You can also swap out

3. Strawberry ghosts. What makes the berries spooky is a ghostly coating of white chocolate.
Pipe a "boo"tiful face on with dark chocolate.
4. Creative fruit and veggie trays. Colorful produce can be used to make a festive and fun display--orange
slices and blueberries are transformed into a jack o'lantern, while
yellow peppers, carrots and cauliflower can be modeled into a much healthier
type of candy corn. Bring a homemade dipping sauce, such as yogurt dip
for the fruit and hummus or guacamole for the veggies.
5. Decorated ready-made snacks. If baking or cooking isn't your thing, you can still whip up a special
snack. "Mummify" food--a pouch of applesauce, a banana, a box
of raisins--by wrapping it in gauze bandages and sticking on googly eyes;
draw jack o'lantern faces on clementines to make mini pumpkins; or
cut up a hard cheese such as cheddar with small Halloween-themed cookie
cutters and pair it with whole-grain crackers.
