Students at Grant Elementary School in Eureka, California, now have another
reason to get moving,thanks to St. Joseph Health — Humboldt County.
St. Joseph Health recently donated pedometers to first- and second-graders
at Grant in an effort to encourage physical activity. Teachers at the
school noticed increased behavioral issues after recess andapproached
St. Joseph about getting some of the devices, which track the number of
The school created a competition between classes, and the grade level with
the most steps at the end will win.
"Kids love to compete and they love to see anything where the numbers
are going up,” first-grade teacher Aimee McGinty told local television
station KIEM, News Channel 3. “And so this will be something that
they're wearing on their person and every time they move or run or
jump, they're going to see those numbers go up and that is really
self-motivating for the kids."
